America of tobacco goods. Under the auspices of this company,
the business has been developed and enormously increased. 80
much so, that I believe I may say that it is probably the
largest British business in China today. Its ramifications
certainly extend over a larger area than any other company,
its representative in many places is the only white man.
There are now employed in China in the business of
manufacturing and distributing nearly 10,000 people including
between 500 and 600 white people. The Company incorporated Sub-
sidiary companies, principally for manufacturing and factories
exist in Shanghai, Mukden, Hankow and Tientsin, as well
Harbin.

Following out the policy of the Company, it has encouraged amongst the Chinese the cultivation of tobacco (and for that purpose, it introduced experts and farmers from America) and has largely decreased the consumption of opium by the intro- duction of the cigarette throughout China. It started with a small staff principally Americans and extended rapidly, and now employs a large number of British and Americans.
